HOW TO TURN AN INTERVIEW INTO A JOB OFFER

THURSDAY  THOUGHT

Questions about interviewing are the hands down, #1 most asked career related questions I get.  For the most part what the job seeker is asking is how do I turn an interview into a job offer.  Oh, they may ask specific questions about specific issues, but in the end what everyone really wants to know is:  How do I turn an interview into a job offer.

My answer: Practice, Practice, Practice...Interviewing.  Acing an interview is not something you can prepare for overnight, however!  Ideally you should have short and long term goals toward which you are working and be able to share these concisely.  You should also be able to relate the current interview and potential offer to both your goals and the employer's goals

You should be current on your industry knowledge and be able to discuss issues and concerns logically.  I don't care if you are applying for a hostess, custodian, or flagger  (or IT, CEO, or sales) position - this is important!  You should be able to discuss
  1. What is important in the industry
  2. Relevant concerns and issues
  3. Recent changes
  4. Direction or projection
  5. Ideas for changes, corrections, or directions
  6. Influencers
As a job seeker (or human being) you should strive to stay current on local, national and large world news.  You should be striving to be the best, balanced, person you can be.  You should push yourself outside of your comfort zone.  Above all, you should strive to maintain a positive outlook.

All that for an interview?!  In a word, YES.  The more you can do on a regular basis to know who you are, what you are about, what you are capable of, and where you are headed, the more comfortable you will be in an interview.  This will allow you to focus on selling yourself to an employer, this is what interviewing really is.

There are certainly routine interview questions you should prepare and practice for.  Next Thursday I will post a video you can use to practice these! But, you can also research other questions that may be asked in your industry or in the current business environment.  If you haven't done so already, you might want to read the series on interviewing in this blog.

Turn your next interview into a job offer!
