Thursday Thought November 8, 2012

Yesterday, one day past post election day 2012, I heard the story of this man:

Three weeks ago a man, paralyzed since the age of seventeen, now midlife, was hospitalized three weeks ago for pancreatitis.  He explained the normal treatment for this is to not eat for several days and it will resolve.  While in the hospital, not eating and hoping for his pancreatitis to pass, he was found to have an abdominal obstruction.  He was rushed to emergency surgery.

He reports that he was to be released on Election Day, November 6, 2012 - but, not until 8 pm when the polls close.  He asked to be discharged early so that he could vote and the hospital was able to accommodate him.

He was transported to his polling place via ambulance where he was wheeled in on a stretcher to vote.

Why did he go to so much trouble to vote?  Because it was important to him and he made up his mind to do it.

What is important to you today?  What will you make up your mind to do?  Make it good!

IT'S ALMOST MONDAY....

Photo from:  http://www.morguefile.com/creative/seabreeze
I started out my work day yesterday (Monday) much as most people do. I checked my calendar - everything was good there. I had one appointment for which I was already prepared. So far so good!

Then I checked my e-mail, which at first appeared to be routine. As I scanned down through the list of incoming mail, I noticed a suspiciously high number of requests for resume rewrites. I thought back over the last several days and realized I hadn't gotten any request for resumes.

After glancing back through the past two weeks, I found that that pattern held true:  A spike of resume work requests were present in my Monday inbox versus any other day.  Sunday's inbox held a few prospects for me, as did Tuesday. But Monday was far and away a huge spike in the need for resumes, at least with my potential and existing clients.

While I realize this is far from scientific, it was enough to get me thinking: What could be different about Monday?  Here is my theory in a nutshell:  People are faced with returning to jobs they don't like after a weekend away from said job.

The need to find a new job asserts itself with the prospect of yet another work week.  Very sad! I think we have all been here a time or two, but hopefully not for long....

We all work 8, 9, 10 or 12 hours a day  - that is a large chunk of our day.  A third of the day plus some is spent working.  That leaves a third or less sleeping and a third or less with family and other personal matters.

I don't blame you for wanting to make a change NOW if your job is not what you want or not moving you toward your career goals... Just don't way til Monday.

IT'S ALMOST MONDAY....NOW!

TAKE STOCK OF YOUR RESOURCES

One of the most important things you can do if you're unemployed is to take stock of your resources.  If you are unemployed, your first reaction might be to say, "Resources, what resources?!" It may be difficult to objective, let alone positive, but we all have resources - no matter how few or how many.

Some of the resources you may have or be able to readily plug into could include:

  1. Skills.  What skills do you have that you can use to improve your current situation? Think in broad categories to get started then add to your list by noting any specialized or unusual skills that you have.  Some very broad categories to consider may include: Management, supervision, customer service, computers, transportation, equipment or professional/trade skills.
  2. Aptitude.  Think about qualities you possess and types of things you are good at.  Are you creative?  Fearless? Thoughtful? A people person? Identify qualities that you have that are good selling points or something that you are proud to say you are. For example, I am proud to say I can learn quickly and never leave a job undone.
  3. People. Who do you have in your life that you can count on for support, guidance, advice, or suggestions?  Who has always been there and can be counted on to keep you moving forward in a positive direction? These people may be family, friends, ex-co workers, clergy or mentors. You may not have been in touch with them recently; that is okay.  Unless they are dead, list them among your resources.
  4. Money.  If you are unemployed you may not be able to list this as a resource.  But, it is important to know what and how much you do have to count on.  Consider cash, 401K, home equity, and credit cards.  There is no way to know how long your unemployment may last for sure, so you will need this information to make your plan.
  5. Equipment.  Do you have a working computer, cell phone, fax machine copier, paper and pens, etc?  If not, do you know where you can quickly access or obtain these resources?  Most libraries and Career One Stops offer use of computers free of charge.  Some provide printing, fax and phone services in addition to various short term training programs.
  6. Plan.  Do you have a plan? Even the fact that you have goals or have started to develop a plan might be a resource for you right now.  Something else in your favor!
  7. Résumé. Of course, you will need a résumé and cover letter if you hope to obtain a job.  You can certainly list this among your resources if you have a current one.

IDENTIFY RESOURCES YOU NEED AND DEVELOP A PLAN

Once you've taken stock of the resources you do have -  start to make notes of the ones that you need. Somethings you can't change, like aptitude.  But if you're missing skills or knowledge you might be able to get training. Don't discount online, free, or short term training.  If nothing else, it can improve your self confidence.

If your network is lacking, you might consider joining a group or volunteering.  I am often surprised about the resistance my clients have to this particular suggestion.  To me, it seems like a no-brainer.  You are no longer getting up, getting dressed and going to work to see other people who acknowledge you exist.  Joining a group or volunteering can serve as a surrogate as well as put you in line to hear about potential job opportunities.

Once you've identified resources that you do need said about figuring out how to obtain them. You may need to research this on the internet or may tap into one of the people on your resource list.  In the end, though, you should have a potential way to obtain or access any of the resources that you need, but don't have.

NO ONE BUT YOU CAN DO THIS DIFFICULT YET IMPORTANT WORK

What resources do you need most?

Thursday Thought November 1, 2012

A NEW DAY TO START OVER

I started out my day yesterday by accidentally knocking over the glass French Press full of hot coffee.  I was barefoot.  The carafe cut me and the coffee burnt me. Yesterday was not a good day.
My foot hurt and reminded me constantly how I was:  careless, clumsy, inattentive, silly…. All kinds of very negative thoughts filled my head. To top it off I had to shell out the money for a new pot or go without coffee!
As it turns out, the kitchen store sells a variety of replacement glass carafes… I couldn’t find the model I needed, but was reassured by the fact that obviously other people had bad days that started out with pots of coffee, cuts and burns.
“The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word “crisis.” One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity.” – Richard Nixon
Literally, I spent the entire day not considering that other people might have faced a similar fate and, most likely, felt much the same as I did.  Did this realization make my pain or embarrassment go away?  No.
But, knowing that other people had faced a similar fate and also had to find a way to deal with it brought me some comfort.  More, it made me feel a little more connected and grounded.
One of the first things I try to do with new clients is to help them understand what they are feeling is normal.  Not to take away from the fact that they are [fill in the negative feeling here], but to understand that they are not alone.  They are connected.

STARTING OVER IS HARD

Depending on your mindset, facing a new day to start over might be a good OR a bad thing….For me it is almost always good; my glass is almost always half full.  But, I have had some hard times where it wasn't so easy to see the glass, even.
I believed there was a glass and understood that some people saw that is was half full and others half empty.  Sometimes I couldn't see the glass because I was crying too hard.  Other times, I turned my head.
If you are unemployed it may be very difficult for you to be positive right now.  You may be hanging onto your negative view out of habit or it might be a lifelong tendency.  Either way, you will have more success in your job search if you can take the positive view.
The choice is yours.  You get to choose, every day, whether be negative or positive.  You get to choose, every day, what to do with what you do have.  You get to choose, every day, how to get what you want.  Every day.
How will you start your new day?
