IT'S ALMOST MONDAY....

Photo from:  http://www.morguefile.com/creative/seabreeze
I started out my work day yesterday (Monday) much as most people do. I checked my calendar - everything was good there. I had one appointment for which I was already prepared. So far so good!

Then I checked my e-mail, which at first appeared to be routine. As I scanned down through the list of incoming mail, I noticed a suspiciously high number of requests for resume rewrites. I thought back over the last several days and realized I hadn't gotten any request for resumes.

After glancing back through the past two weeks, I found that that pattern held true:  A spike of resume work requests were present in my Monday inbox versus any other day.  Sunday's inbox held a few prospects for me, as did Tuesday. But Monday was far and away a huge spike in the need for resumes, at least with my potential and existing clients.

While I realize this is far from scientific, it was enough to get me thinking: What could be different about Monday?  Here is my theory in a nutshell:  People are faced with returning to jobs they don't like after a weekend away from said job.

The need to find a new job asserts itself with the prospect of yet another work week.  Very sad! I think we have all been here a time or two, but hopefully not for long....

We all work 8, 9, 10 or 12 hours a day  - that is a large chunk of our day.  A third of the day plus some is spent working.  That leaves a third or less sleeping and a third or less with family and other personal matters.

I don't blame you for wanting to make a change NOW if your job is not what you want or not moving you toward your career goals... Just don't way til Monday.

IT'S ALMOST MONDAY....NOW!

If you need help making a change, let me know.  A $59 Resume qualifies you for  unlimited career counseling via email and internet for one year at $39.

Monday Mission October 1, 2012

Do something.  That’s right – move it; just do something.  Many job seekers whether employed or unemployed allow themselves to become paralyzed.  If you are looking for work you may be overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the effort required.  Perhaps you are stymied by a lack of response.

Whatever the case, you will not get where you want to be through inaction. You will get where you want to be through action. It is okay to make a mistake, if this is what is holding you back. Likewise it is perfectly acceptable if you make only a small dent in your list of job search tasks.

ACTION WILL BRING YOU REACTION

If you are aching for some response to your job search efforts you must be active in your job search. There is just no way around it. If you have to force yourself, enlist others to prod you, or use an elaborate system of rewards and punishments then so be it.

Action of some sort is better than none.  If the case is that you are overwhelmed then you will only benefit from whittling away at the mountain of job search tasks at hand.  If you are fearful of sending out an imperfect resume, cover letter, or resume then it is important to understand that if no one sees it in time to be considered then it won’t matter.

“A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.” - George Bernard Shaw

YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

So how can you do what you need to be successful?
1.      Have one big goal, make it yours, yearn for it.
2.    Make a list of tasks or activities that will move you closer to your goal.
3.    Break your tasks or activities down into daily doses.
4.    Act on these tasks or activities consistently and well.

That’s it…four simple steps.  I know you can do it – Go ahead!

What is holding you back from the action you need to succed?

Today really feels like fall and underlines the change of season that is coming imminently!  Change can be both exciting and scary - something to look forward to or dread.  How you view it makes all the difference in the world.

If you have been injured at work you may find yourself feeling forced to make a career change.  Typically this is not met with a positive attitude.  You likely loved your job, did it well, and planned to continue performing as long as you could.  It was known and ….Read More

When you are job searching and preparing for interviews, it can be helpful to secure Letters of Reference from prior employers.  If possible, obtain one from each supervisor.  If not, one can be a coworker, preferably in a higher level position than the one you held.

Preparing a personalized template for each contact will increase your chances of obtaining a helpful Letter of Reference in a timely manner….Read More

Ideally my job tip of the day would be that you review and (if necessary) revise your goals.  However, I know that not everyone has identifiable, attainable, and/or realistic goals.  Certainly, if you have been injured and are facing a return to work after medical recuperation you may not have had the opportunity to think about what you will do.

So, if you haven't set any - let's….Read More
