HOW TO FIND UNADVERTISED JOBS

One of the first challenges a job seeker faces is how to find job openings, or find employers that may have job openings. Too many rely heavily, if not exclusively, on online applications. These openings are known by, and applied to by, so many job seekers that it reduces the chances of any one job seeker being seriously considered.

Tapping into the hidden job market is the best way to be considered for jobs that are or will be available, but have not yet been widely advertised. This path is not for the lazy! It requires hard and consistent work in identifying employers and/or industries who might be interested in hiring the job seeker.

Research, contact, and follow up are required to find these openings. Many job seekers are just not that willing to put in the effort – doing so will set you apart from other applicants. In addition, a job seeker who adopts this approach will also have social contact and feedback that are missing when one is off work.

YOU CAN TAP INTO THE HIDDEN JOB MARKET

How do you find unadvertised jobs (or tap into the hidden job market)? Follow theses tips to find openings other job seekers are not applying to:

1.    Make a list of large employers in your targeted area
2.    Research the hiring manager contact information for each company
3.    Develop a phone script explaining that you would like more information about current and future hiring
4.    Call each employer and make careful note of the answers (you won't remember)
5.    Don't be satisfied with "We are not hiring" - Ask such questions as:
·         When do you expect to be hiring for____ again?
·         How often have you hired for __________in the past?
·         Do you know any other employers who are currently or getting ready for _____position?

You can repeat the process with employers for whom you have worked, would like to work, or for whom friends currently work, etc. Networking in general is an excellent way to identify unadvertised jobs.  Research your labor market using www.acinet.org.

The effort of identifying and tapping into the hidden job market is not only worth it, but a necessary part of a successful job search. Try it with whatever method you are currently using to increase your chances of obtaining a job! You may be surprised at what you find...
